Smokers have really been catching it lately haven't they? Florida is big on the anti-smoking campains for kids, haven't seen that it has worked very well around here. I think that around here a pack will cost about $3.50 now. But then we are used to having the crap taxed out of us for everything.

The Evolution and De-Evolution of Democracy

The following piece was sent to me by listener Dallas Cole. Many of you asked that it be put on our website so....here it is.

How Long Do We Have?

About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;

2. From spiritual faith to great courage;

3. From courage to liberty;

4. From liberty to abundance;

5. From abundance to complacency;

6. From complacency to apathy;

7. From apathy to dependence;

8. From dependence back into bondage ."

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000
Presidential election:

Population of counties won by: Gore: 127 million; Bush: 143 million;

Square miles of land won by: Gore: 580,000; Bush: 2,427,000

States won by: Gore: 19 Bush: 29

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Gore: 13.2 Bush: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was mostly the land owned by the tax-paying citizens of this great country. Gore's territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some 40 percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

funny, they dont fight that with the alcohol companies and the asbastic (spel) before it was known how badly it damages your lungs.......

but notice its about the cost to treat the sympotoms, they still dont offer more incentives for patches and such.

What do I care if Texas smokers want to spend 1.5 billion on smoking related health cost .....

I should care if my government spends it ....    We simply can not afford to fix every thing for every one ....

Now where does that 1.5 billion come from .....   out of the pockets of hard working Americans that will have to find another source of money to bolster their own retirement accounts and pay for their own medical care or wind up on welfare as yet another victim for the government to support ...

The way we think now produces a never ending supply of victims that will vote for the candidate that promises them the most of hard working peoples money ...   Legalized theft ....

As for alcohol ...   don't worry ....    next on the agenda is fat people ....   alcohol is not far down the line ....

i think its an awesome idea. cigarettes are between 9-10 a pack in canada-and the rate of smokers is dropping. and people should pay for their high risk lifestyles-why should those of us that work to stay healthy pay for people with bad habits?

also, in my city, nobody can smoke in any public or private premises-excluding ones home. in fact you cant even smoke outside the doorway-and i love it. i never stink like smoke at restaurants anymore. :)

You could raise the tax to ten bucks a pack and not one dime of it would find its way to healing someone that got sick from smoking.

They will mismanage the funds .. spend it anywhere but what it was collected for and still steal more money from your pocket trying to heal a dying person that was to stupid to quit.

If you want your government to protect you from cradle to grave ... Tell you what you can or can't do for your own good, I suppose this is a good thing ...

If you want freedom .... then their is a cost .... you get to pay for your own stupid mistakes ...

the difference is our tax/health care systems. in canada, we dont pay for healthcare. whenever i go to the hospital or see a doctor, i dont pay. when i needed a colonoscopy i got one within a week-free of charge. my mom got in, got her tests done, and was diagnosed and on medication within 2 weeks for her leukemia-not one dime out of pocket. my youngest brother, who has diabetes, gets his treatment without paying either-good deal i say. none of us smoke, drink, or use drugs. all of us exercise. but we work and pay our taxes. but the smokers die and get sick at a MUCH higher rate than anyone else (only thing that comes close is fat, inactive people). so they should support a larger payment for their piece of the healthcare pie. as should fat people. in fact there is a bill in our parliament to tax transfats at a higher rate. i say good. other than the fact that fat is killing industrialized society, i hate seeing fat asses and saggy bodies when i go to the beach-its just not nice to look at. lol!

as for "government telling us what to do", who cares? they tell you when you can drive, where you can drive, when you can drink, what you can consume, times you can cut your lawn, when you can water your grass, how to transport your gasoline, how you pump your gas, where you can walk or ride a bike on the streets, how loud you can have your music, who you can marry, who you can have sex with, who you can adopt, who you can kill, who you can eat (why is canibalism illegal between consenting adults?), etc. etc.............

life is full of laws. get over it. and show me your boobs.

The point is..no SS #..no benefits. If someone is given any; its because someone made a mistake while looking over the app. and if that is discovered , benefits are dropped

Everyone is looking for a boogey man to blame for their whoas. commies, arabs, treehuggers, unions, corporations, illegals, whatever. the fact of the matter is, we all want the same thing-to live, enjoy life, and prosper. just everyone has different ideas on how to get there. who can blame an "illegal" for wanting the same thing. but smoking is a terrible scab upon society. it hurts not just the smoker, but those that breath the second hand smoke, and those that have to help foot the bill for the health costs of those that engage in this high risk recreational activity. it is a blight upon society. make cigarettes 20 a pack i say. and make all beaches topless.

maybe sex should be illegal for some people-or at least forced sterilization. if someone does not have the ability or intention to care for their offspring, they should not be allowed to procreate-so i agree with you. why should others pay for the children of those too stupid to use birth control? but smoking is still killing more people than drugs. :)
