3 y/o Rescued While Playing on Freeway
3-year-old found playing along interstate highway, police say mom napping at home

ASSOCIATED PRESS
December 31, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS – Drivers swerved cars and trucks into other lanes to avoid a 3-year-old boy, wearing only a diaper and T-shirt, who was playing along a busy highway after wandering away from home while his mother slept, police said.
Some motorists stopped along Interstate 465 on the city's west side Saturday to take care of the boy until officers arrived, the Indiana State Police said.

“I looked up and I seen this little ... boy running down the middle of the slow lane in the interstate. I just could not believe what I was seeing,” said Troy Crady, one of those who stopped to help.
The boy, Damon Dyer, was unscathed as at least a half-dozen cars and a tractor-trailer rig swerved into other lanes to avoid him. Temperatures were in the mid 50s as the boy ran around barefooted.

Police said they traced the toddler to an apartment at a nearby complex, where they found his mother, Nancy Dyer asleep in a filthy apartment and his 2-year-old sister eating spaghetti off the floor.

Dyer, 33, was arrested on two counts of child neglect and remained in custody Sunday, officials said.

Senior State Trooper Cedric Merritt said that when Dyer was told of her son's activities, she responded: “Oh, he got out again.”

Investigators said the boy got out his second-story apartment, went down stairs and got around a fence to reach the highway about 200 yards away.

Child Protective Services took the boy and his sister into custody, and investigators said the agency also had been called to the apartment Thursday because the boy was outside unsupervised.

That just breaks my heart, I just don't understand why some people are parents.

Kids can do alot of damage and get into a lot of trouble in a very short amount of time. the fact that the mother didnt even act like it was a big deal is a very scary thing.

I agree butter... it breaks my heart also.

I used t live in an apartment where this girl got pregnant to entrap her boyfriend at the time to make him stick around. She also said that she got more assistance from the government with more kids. She took lousy care of them. I guess some people just shouldn't be reproducing.

Children getting out of the house is nothing new, happens all the time but the mom sleeping and not seeming to care, that is awful as is the home environment. I feel for those children, heck of a start in life.

I know of a place in Alabama where having kids for the government money is the way of life and their only income, need a little more money, have another child. But they never tell who the father is, and he is usually living right there with them anyway. And lets not forget that they teach the children to do bad in school and act stupid, that gets more money also. Pitiful.

I had a girlfriend that was divorced, with a six year old daughter. She used to sleepwalk at night. I put a lock up high on the outside door, because she would walk right out the front door. She would unlock the locks and everything. It was creepy.

Great movie, though.

I just have a hard time believing that there is no way to 100% childproof a door, especially when you're dealing with a toddler.

I agree. Kids are great at getting out no matter what you do but parents should be aware of that fact.

In most cases, parents are aware of the crafty nature of their child and take precautions to keep them safe. In this case, the mother was just plain neglectful and I would doubt if she was just waiting for those kids to be taken off of her hands.

The mistake many people make is having kids to get more money from Uncle Sam......but in reality.....the amount of money given is minimal and the person just has more bills to pay and just enough money to do it. Its all a little game that ignorant people in the lowere economic rung of the ladder play .......only to discover that they have more responsibilty and really not that much money left over. Its a mad , mad world.......

Back to crafty kids......My child knows about the danger of being outside without proper supervision.....knows her limits and gentle reminders help. When she wants something that I have put out of reach.....she will get it , no matter what. She is goal oriented and if she wants a pair of scissors...preschool or regular...and they are on a high shelf..she will get them. She may get a bruise or break something in the process or she may just get it without me knowing. It is when she is quiet that I know she is up to sneaky 4 year old behavior. She has climbed shelves to get something I have taken away from her and put in "time out" when she is not listening to me. She has stacked her step tools and little chairs on top of one another to get candy I have in the pantry on the highest shelf........luckily she was not hurt.

While her sneakiness wears me out and always makes me wonder what she is up to...I am proud of her ability to process and figure out how to get what she wants. She is smart enough to know what can hurt her, but still young enough to not foreget that she could get hurt. That is where I step in and remember that I am the parent and its my job to protect her no matter how tired I am. If I wantto take a damn nap...I call a friend to take care of her so I can rest; I dont sleep while she is home unless hubby is with me...good grief.

Stepping down from my soap box, I will simply state that its mothers like that who make mothers like me and my close friends look bad.  I sure wish US of A was here to get in on this...dammit

Amen Bread, as the parent you get to be the friend later, but the role now is..parent, protecter and teacher.

We had a case recently of two children playing naked in the streets, and this was the second time CPS had some contact. The children are now in foster care, there was a total 4 in the house and the mother and grandmother both where sleeping andreally dindt care.

sad, sad sad.

and Im with Butter, there are ways to toddler proff the doors and windows that allow them to stay in and be safe. Like Ronin.....a lock at the top is unreachable.

Thats so sad......I dont have to worry about childproofing much anymore, these days. Our front door has a door knob cover on it, but my daughter knows how to pop those off. The front door is too difficult for her to open, but that thing slows her down even more and give me time to be on alert and check on her if I hear some fiddling with it. Our back yard is fenced in and she knows she needs to ask to go out.....for her protection. If I am working in the family room or kitchen and she wants to go out, I open the blinds and can keep an eye on her...big windows and all. She knows how dangerous parking lots can be, but needs reminders; she is 4...I see adults being careless in parking lots; I cant exoect her to be perfect.

So ....ya think this woman will get her kids back? I think she will....CPS can only do so much that they are allowed to do. I would take them away forever.......those kids are not safe and God forbid they go back to that woman.
