Barb French has three good reasons to be happy Starbucks is banning artery-clogging trans fats from its food: her own health and the health of her two young daughters.
"I like my arteries, and I like theirs," French said Tuesday, as Adele Matter, 6, and her sister Daphne, 5, munched on a chewy rice cereal square in a Starbucks store here.
Starting Wednesday, all donuts, muffins and other treats sold in half of Starbucks Corp.'s standalone U.S. stores will be completely free of trans fats, the company said.
The world's largest specialty coffee retailer hopes to cut trans fats from the rest of its U.S. and Canadian stores by the end of the year, spokesman Brandon Borrman said.
"Our focus has always been on providing our customers with healthy and nutritious food options," he said.
Trans fats, listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, are thought to boost "bad" cholesterol and decrease "good" cholesterol.
The fats have attracted attention from health regulators, most notably in New York, where city officials have approved a ban on trans fats in restaurants and eateries.
Borrman said Starbucks' move was not prompted by the New York ban. "This is something we've been working on, on our own, for a couple of years now," he said.
Company-owned Starbucks stores in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore. will have zero trans fats in their food as of Wednesday, Borrman said.
Getting the other half of those 5,600 company-owned stores to follow suit will take some time, as the company adjusts recipes with regional bakers and food suppliers.
Starbucks also licenses about 3,200 stores that are operated by other businesses, such as kiosks in airports and grocery stores. The company hopes to move those stores' menus to zero trans fats this year.
However, Starbucks already had quietly replaced the fats in its nationally distributed food products, such as its seasonal pumpkin muffins and gingerbread, Borrman said.
Starbucks said it hasn't heard many complaints about those items' taste, and the company hopes that the only thing tipping customers off to the recipe change will be signs announcing the switch.
"We've worked diligently to make sure we're making this conversion while keeping the same high quality that our customers expect," Borrman said.
He was unsure of trans-fat plans for locations outside the U.S. and Canada, but said stores in some countries already operate under local trans fat regulations. The Seattle-based company has more than 12,400 stores worldwide.
Some food makers stopped using trans fats voluntarily after the FDA began requiring trans-fat content on food labels.
Wendy's International Inc. introduced a zero-trans fat oil in August. Yum Brands Inc.'s KFC and Taco Bell said they also will cut the trans fats from many foods in their kitchens.
McDonald's has experimented with healthier oil blends for its french fries and has vowed to be ready for New York's ban, which takes effect for restaurant fryers on July 1.
Starbucks posted net fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $117.3 million in October, on revenue of $2 billion. Stock markets were closed Tuesday in observance of former President Ford's funeral.

You do realize that they are probably doing this so they wont get sued by the fat ass who has a daily dose of Venti double shot espresso with a Apple strudel drizzled in monkey fat? Right? Never mind that his fat heart was clogged and choking for a number of years....its Starbucks fault that he has coronary heart disease..not his.
Sorry....

Well, yeah..I mean...if they didnt make them so delicious, I would eat a whole box in 15 minutes...damn them to hell for tempting me and raising my cholesterol and making me fat .....damaging my heart......just like those places that make coffee hot......they know it can burn me if I spill it on me .......or drink it too fast...I mean...come on.

I'm not sure why you guys don't like this. They're making their products healthier for their customers. A lot of people are avoiding trans fats, so it's only good for business. They have every right to make their product more acceptable to the customer. I think it's great.

Why cant they just change a few items ...I avoid trans fats as much as I can. When I go to Starbucks for coffee and a snack, I am with my daughter and its a treat. I dont go to eat freaking rice cakes. I care about my arteries too and that is why I dont eat bad food every meal or snack. An occasional blueberry muffin from Starbucks wont hurt my heart.
Its all about control.....people dont have any so they expect vendors to force them to control their eating habits. Whats next? Food rationing? Grocery stores telling me how much food I can buy?
I know what's bad for me; I dont need Starbucks rationing my fat intake because they think they will make more money...

No they are not ..... They are trying to get out ahead a a gagilion law suits that lawyers are trying to lay upon them ... Read the book ( The Case against lawyers ) .....
They made a good product .... it sold ... made them famous ..... So why are the changing it ????? Because they know the political environment in America is changing ..... One reason is the government is going broke trying to pay for all the people that refuse to eat right and end up sick .....
They have two choices .... tell people that they will have to pay for their own medical bills when they have heart attacks from eating crap and not exercising or tell companies that they have to change their recipes so not so many pigs get sick ...
Question .... If you was a politician trying to get reelected in America today .... would you run on the platform of I'm going to save you from all your mistakes and pay all your medical bills to boot.
or
Hey .... If your stupid enough to eat shit ... then pay your own medical bills ... I'm not going to steal it from hard working people just so you can be a slob without dealing with the consequences ....
This country is no longer about freedom ... it's more about power grabs and screwing they neighbor for the almighty buck ....
Starbucks wouldn't give a rats ass for your health .... for the security of their pocket books .... they sell your freedom of choice in a New York minute ...

Thats the point. I know that thy just went up a dollar on smokes here to help pay for the medical bills of smokers. The medicare system and the welfare system hits the poor up the hardest. If you have a litter of kids, say i have no clue who the daddy is....benifits,medical and food. Get paid to sit on your butt. If you need more money.....have another kid. The sad facxt is the stipon raise you get doenst cover it.
Personally, I think if you get yourself so overweigh that your endangering your health, the medicare system should treat only illnesses that are normal and not "weigh" related just like if you end up on medcaid and smoke, lung and heart problems, your cost.
but thats called..........denial of serives, which is a lawsuit.
and thats also called responsablity which alot of people in this general population hate, and dont want any part of.

Remember that little thing I posted somewhere .... the one that said once people figure out they can vote free gifts from the government , It's not long after that that the governments folds because it just can not afford free everything for everybody. Yes help the needy, but damn, 100 percent of the population can't be needy. It just won't work.
The other thing it said was the country turns back into a communist country, It's the only way it can continue. This has happened time and time again over the centuries.
Only way to stop it will never happen .... Grow so balls and just say no....
But you see... it's more important to vote for your own personal needs then for the good of the country
don't you get it? Starbucks is pulling all of their products that contains trans fat for marketing purposes. not becouse "Big Brother" has them on their hit list or what not..what a bunch of crap i might add if you actually believe that. yes i see it now, conspiricy theories, black helicopters, Starbucks, and trans fat mind control. what a bunch of balony. if i were a CEO of a company such as Starbucks i would jump on the anti-trans fat bandwagon as well. it make my company look good.

I think you'll be surprised how good baked goods can be without trans-fats. I used to substitute vegetable oil for hard fats in recipes all the time. It didn't always work, but most of the time things came out great.
I don't feel like I'm expecting Starbucks to control my eating habits. I would like to buy a healthier product, and they're making it available, because they want my business. Is that a lack of personal responsibility on my part?

You're absolutely right. It's had a tremendous impact on the food industry, as of January 1 of last year, trans fats needed to be listed on ingredient and food labels. Rather than do that, some companies just very quietly requested of their suppliers that trans fats be removed and products reconfigured. It kept me very, very busy.
In many cases there's no compromise in flavor. Starbucks could very easily have eliminated trans fats without saying a word and people probably would not have known the difference, however, they chose to use it as what will probably be a successful marketing tool. I think you'll see other companies following suit.
I'll still use butter in my baking, though, lol.

Your right ... pulling them out because of marketing purpose .... Thats exactly what they are doing .... Why .... because big brother has decoded that we should not eat them any more ..... you know ... to save us from ourselves ...
As of January last year .... they needed to listed on the ingredients list ..... This year a few cities banned them being used in food products .... next year .... well to start with ..... The morons that make regulations for the trucking industry are deciding now how much a driver can weigh before he is disqualified and gets to loose every thing he worked for his whole life ....
Then the next year .... It took them about twenty years to get where they are with cigarettes .... A perfectly legal product attacked for the sole purpose of lowering the cost of health care to the government for people to stupid to quite
Stop yanking my dick ..... First off .... tell people that smoke and eat till they are 400 pounds they can handle their own health care .... It's supposed to be a free country and pursue happiness in the way that that makes you happy .... Not get happy in a way that saves the government money.... If I want to eat myself into an early grave thats nobodies business but my own .... So all you skinny fuckers can kiss my fat full of trans fat ass ....
Secondly .... stop beating around the bush ..... If you want to make something illegal ... then just do it .... If cigarettes are hurting this country .... then add them to the list of controlled substances ..... Don't spend millions of tax dollars on bullshit designed to sway the publics opinion and then sneak your law through.
This government is not asking the people what laws they want ... The decide what we want and then ajust the laws slowly till we are doing as they think we should...
This is what Star Bucks knows .... and they are smart to read the writing on the walls .....

There you go twisting my words to support your opinion.
It is not necessary to inform me of the wonders of baked goods without trans fat. I dont have a problem with using things in moderation. If Starbucks products were a staple in my household and I used them everyday, well.....I would think the trans fat removal is great. But to destroy the one luxury item I treat myself to on occassion just bugs me. If consumers are so freaking worried about what their kids eat and what their arteries look like.....they shoudl keep em at home in a box. I care about my childs health and that is whay we dont eat fat-filled crap every meal.
Starbucks doesnt need to do anythin to make more money..... They could soak coffee beans in monkey piss, slap their logo on it, market the benefits of simian urine on the bag the beans come in and VIOLA......more millions.
I dont care what they do.....

See ... freedom of BC's own choice ..... now thats what America is supposed to be about ....
To bad though .... the butter you know and love today will shortly be taken away from you .... whether they just remove the ingredients and leave you with a look alike or just Ban the product all together ...
My guess is they will and a trans fat tax .... and make it to exspensive to buy ...

Trans fat tax...scary.
I envision rationing......just a certain amount of fat (trans, sat., mono) allowed per household. If you go passed your limit, you and your family are required to participate in a medical study and exercise program. Forced medical tests....diets, etc.
I will probably be dead from clogged arteries by that time since I cant enjoy baked goods without trans fat and all. Pardon me while I go scratch my ass...its takes a long time...its so big. I have been Starfucked !Damn that Starbucks

So I'll just make my own butter, it's not hard to do. It takes 15 minutes.
If people want fat analogues, that's fine too - it keeps people like me employed. Food and culinary scientists have been working on that long before any of this came up, for a variety of reasons.
You have a choice, you know. If you don't like what Starbucks is doing, don't support them. Make your own products. If you don't like that some cities are prohibiting trans fats, don't purchase those products that have traditionally contained them.

I know trans fats are bad .... and I also know enough to watch how many I eat .....
My whole point is .... whether it be trans fat or cigarettes or whatever the evil thing is ... Our government will go broke and all our freedom will be lost if they continue to try and save us from all the harm that could possibly fall upon us ....
Tell the people it's bad for them and let them make their own choice in the market place .... Enough people stop eating products with trans fat in them ... then the companies will make products without them ....

Again; I dont care what they are doing......it does not harm me in any way. I just wish people would stop messing with a good thing. Add no trans fat products to the menu instead of sumbitting to whiney soccer mom who feed their kids cardboard with rice glued to it....because they like their arteries. HEEEELLLLOOOO...take you kids to Tofubucks if you only want healthy stuff......why Starbucks? Coffee is coffee even with that soy crap and no sugar......even decaf has caffeine. Too much of anything is bad for you........
Well......except for M&M's

Tell the people it's bad for them and let them make their own choice in the market place .... Enough people stop eating products with trans fat in them ... then the companies will make products without them .... Yes, that is EXACTLY what has happened. Companies are now making and SELLING products without them. And Starbucks is one of the companies which is selling products without them.
I just think it's sad that some small step is made toward making it easier for people to have healthy diets and everybody gets all up in arms about it. Everyone will fight for the right to eat trans-fats, because they want to know that they CAN. Well, guess what, nobody is stopping you. You have every right to patronize another establishment. But just as you have a right to eat what you want, Starbucks has a right to sell what it wants.
I'm amazed by you guys' reaction, and now I can see why companies hesitate to make their products healthier.

So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time. - Green Day
It's always been easy for people to eat healthier, the options are out there - people just don't always choose the healthiest foods available. Even in fast food restaurants there are choices other than those which are fat and calorie-laden. When consumers began demanding healthier alternatives to burgers and fries, the burden fell upon the food industry to bring to the table products that are healthier, still taste good, and can be obtained quickly. The issues of taste, health concerns, and ease of preparation in the foodservice industry are not static - as those factors continue to change, so will the foodservice operators and corporations. As a simple example, when consumers became more knowledgeable about fast food, everyone wanted wanted healthy options, now everyone sells salads. People wanted convenience and something they could eat while doing other things, those salads are now enrobed in tortillas and served as wraps. When so many people were on the Atkins craze, menus of many restaurants had special sections devoted to Atkins-friendly entrees, and those who didn't instructed their employees on how to smile and say "sure" when a customer requested a burger without the bun. Corporations would rather change than to lose their customer base and the money those customers bring in.
Starbucks is removing trans fats and issued that press release because they're capitalizing on the trend to remove trans fats - not for the consumer, but for Starbucks. It's not impossible to consider that the person who goes to Starbucks and spends $2 on one espresso brownie might think, "hmm, no trans fats, it's not as bad for me anymore so I can have two." Or that the person who previously never ordered anything but a venti soy latte might now consider a food purchase. And don't think for a minute that this was a snap decision, I'd bet everything I have that they've been building toward it until the time was ripe for them to reap the greatest benefit. It's a brilliant marketing strategy. Don't get me wrong, I love Starbucks and I love their baked goods but the fact of the matter is that Starbucks is doing what's best for their bottom line, nothing more.

This is kind of a long article but it's worth reading. This was reprinted on one of my professional association websites.
A big part of what I've had to do for over a year is work on developing low sodium, all natural, allergen-free, and organic products that taste good, while sometimes incorporating functional ingredients (i.e., things that have a specific health benefit) - all while keeping in mind what the consumer is willing to pay for these healthier alternatives because making money is the bottom line.
Food Makers Get on a Health Kick
by Jeannine DeFoe
New York City's decision to ban restaurants from using artificial trans fats is the latest salvo in the war against unhealthy eating. Many food companies have spent the past several years offering products with less sugar, sodium, or fat to health-conscious consumers. Now big food manufacturers such as Kraft Foods are rolling out healthier versions of well-known products. PepsiCo and others are acquiring smaller companies that make products deemed to be healthy. And more organic and natural foods are being produced to satisfy the demands of consumers and retailers.
The push toward healthier food comes as obesity-related illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease, are on the rise. Evidence shows that consumption of trans fat causes levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, to rise, and levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, to decline, according to the American Heart Assn. When this happens, the arteries become clogged and the risk of having a heart attack or stroke increases. Diabetes, a disease that's exacerbated by being overweight, at least doubles that risk, according to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse.
To lure consumers, companies are rolling out foods that promise to both taste good and be healthier. Campbell Soup this fall rolled out reduced-sodium soups with sea salt, which is naturally lower in sodium than table salt. The new versions offer the same flavor but with 25% less sodium.
PepsiCo's new Flat Earth fruit and vegetable crisps have the equivalent of a serving of fruit or vegetables in each ounce. Already, the company's Frito-Lay unit has baked versions of snacks, including Cheetos and Ruffles potato chips. PepsiCo and Kraft also offer 100-calorie versions of snacks such as Chips Ahoy! and Doritos. Oreo cookie maker Kraft, PepsiCo, and other big food companies have drastically cut or eliminated trans fats from many of their foods.
PepsiCo has made a string of purchases of small health food companies this year, including Stacy's Pita Chip Co., a maker of baked snacks; Izze Beverage Co., which produces sparkling fruit juices for consumers seeking an alternative to soda; and premium juice maker Naked Juice Co. The company is also producing its own line of high-protein drinks and other foods that don't carry the Pepsi name to be sold in stores such as Whole Foods Market.
Meanwhile, as consumers are becoming more aware of what they're putting in their bodies, Wal-Mart Stores and supermarket chains such as Kroger are copying the lead of Whole Foods Market in trying to sell a greater variety of "better for you" products and even putting pressure on food producers to offer more organic and natural foods. Smaller companies, such as Hain Celestial Group, that sell primarily organic and healthy foods should see stronger demand for their products, in Standard & Poor's view.
More companies are also promising a specific benefit to the consumer in their foods. In January, 2007, Coca-Cola and partner Nestle will launch Enviga, a green-tea drink containing caffeine and calcium—ingredients the companies say are proven to increase metabolism. Consumers can burn as many as 100 calories a day by drinking three 12-oz. cans of Enviga, making the beverage a "negative calorie" food, according to the companies.
PepsiCo's new Tava contains chromium, a mineral that also increases metabolism. Groupe Danone is finding success with Activa, a yogurt containing the probiotic bifidus. Sales of this so-called "functional food," which promises to regulate the digestive system, jumped 36% in 2005 and should, Danone says, reach $1 billion in 2006, which would make it the company's leading brand.

Thats just it .... The government is well on it's way to stopping you. Starbucks making the decision to cut the fats is one thing. The point I'm making is they never would do it except for the fact that the government has moved to making it happing whether Starbucks or anyone else wants it wants to or not.
Starbucks is smart by getting ahead of the craze. They will profit greatly from it.
But the fact remains that if special interest had not pushed the government on the issue. Starbucks would still be selling the same food.
Now just to keep it straight ...
A company deciding to sell healthier food is cool .....
A government deciding I'm going to eat better is not ....
A company deciding to sell healthier food is cool .....
A government deciding I'm going to eat better is not ....
Well, okay. I see what you're saying. But I think that if the government is going to have to pay your future health care in the form of Medicare, then maybe they do have a right. I think you said something about that previously, so I guess you know what I'm talking about. I'm not completely sure how I feel about that whole issue.

Medicare? You have to be kidding me...the government makes you think that they are helping you. Medicare takes money out of our paychecks, remember? The Govt isnty giving us crap. Dont depend on anybody taking care of you when you are old, much less the Government.
