"Pox Parties"

This is primarily for those of you with children.  I saw a story on the Today show this morning about how some parents are having "Pox Parties," for their children.  A "Pox Party" is where one or more child has chickenpox and other children are brought over to play with them, in hopes that the healthy child will get the disease.  This is to allow the healthy child to get chickenpox and get it over with instead of possibly being infected as an adult, which would present a more serious infection.

Here's a link to a news story.

What do you think?  If I had children, I wouldn't do it.

One word.....STUPID.

ChickenPox, in general has mutated into a serious infection because of all the anti -vaccine group of parents. Chicken pox can be serious at any age. Plus, you can get it twice...because of that mutation. I had it, but obviuously outgrew the immunity to it because as an adult...a titer showed that I was not immune. I got a chicken pox shot when I was in my 30, before I decided to have children. The shot only weakens the virus and if I am exposed to chicken pox, I may get a mild case of it. I will live.....

Parents these days are idiots....we all freaking survived chicken pox and colds and bumps and bruises....I climbed freaking trees, jumped ramps with my bike and lived.

I got all my diseases I ever had without a freaking party......Whats next? A gential warts party? A Genital herpes party. I would like to see the inviation for that.....KAAAATTTTTTT!

RE: "Pox Parties"

I was watching the show and was incredulous listening to this woman talking about how great these "pox parties" are.  I couldn't believe it.

The sad thing is that they dont realize that exposure to Chicken Pox without a vaccination may result in a  dangerous  strain of Pox. The vaccination does not always wipe it out, but it does lessen the  contagious period and severity. Pox is not the same as it was when we were kids.

God help these poor children  with these insane parents. Hopefully non of them gets exposed to a bad strain that causes blindness, sterility or death.

Idiots...just plain idiots.

My son managed to catch it naturally thru contagion at daycare.  He had a very mild case, so will probably contract it again at some point in his life.  I would NOT take him to any party in the hopes that he would deliberately catch a disease.  What the heck?  Because it might be a convenient time for me?  To get it over with?

That is what is so sad about the whole concept of Pox parties.....parents want what is convenient for them rather than letting nature take its course.

HEEEELLLOOOO..when we decided to be parents we had an idea of all the curve balls that would be thrown at us.....colds right before an important business meeting, chicken pox before a vacation...etc..etc.....

I never ever thought I would say this in my entire life. but I am glad I think more like my mom and dad used to think when they were young parents.....or middle aged, I guess.

Back in the 60s the parents in our neighborhood tried to expose their kids to chickenpox because of the belief (not sure whether it was correct or not) that chickenpox is much more harmful when it is contracted as an adult.  Also because of the fear that they could get it in the future when they or their wives were pregnant (because it supposedly could cause birth defects).  It was done in the interest of the children.  Could this possibly be the thinking in the present day?

That is possible.....but now with the varicella vaccine that kids get at 12 months...that lessens the chances if getting it totally or with such grave danger.

I was vaccinated as a 30 year old when  my blood test showed I was not immune to measles or chicken pox. I had chicken pox as a toddler and had all my required vaccinations for measles. My doctor told me that sometimes that immunity wears off......weird, huh?

So it may not matter if you had chicken pox as a child anyway...the immunity may wear off.

Double crraaaaappppp  !

I've also heard that chickenpox can be very dangerous to pregnant women, but I've never investigated it to see if there's any truth to it.  I'll find out and report back.

I had chickenpox when I was 7.
