This happened a mile or less from where I work, it hit close to home in more ways than one.

An FBI agent was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Readington, N.J., home and garden center Thursday after an earlier incident at an area bank, according to local news reports.

A law enforcement official said FBI agents were investigating a string of recent bank robberies in central New Jersey when they came upon the robbery suspects leaving a bank near Route 22 in Readington.

A shootout ensued.

The agent who was shot was rushed to a hospital for treatment but he later died.

One of the suspects was captured and two fled to nearby woods, the official said. Television station helicopter footage showed police putting at least one person in handcuffs into a car. WNYW reported that there were two suspects in custody but that is not confirmed.

State and local authorities were searching for the suspect or suspects with helicopters and dogs.

Police swarmed an area around the shopping center, which contained several barns and other large buildings located in fields. SWAT team members could be seen entering each one.

WABC reported that the FBI victim was shot in the parking lot of Avis Garden Center on Route 22 in the Whitheouse Section of Readington. The shooting is believed to be related to an earlier incident at a PNC Bank across the street from the garden center.

One suspect, who is described as a black male with a tattoo near his right eye, was nabbed by police shortly after the shooting. He could be seen sitting handcuffed against a car, with both shoes off, and surrounded by SWAT team members with guns.

Footage from TV news helicopters shows the front of one car pointed at the side of another behind crime-scene tape.

As a sad addendum, the agent was killed by friendly fire - the accidental weapon discharge of a fellow agent.

The bank robbery suspect was caught this morning.

Thanks, I'm fine although a little sad. With all of the LE personnel and equipment around, I barely looked over my shoulder when I went home, I wasn't concerned at all. It's sad and tragic, no matter how you look at it.
