Eight Katrina evacuees arrested in murder cases

(1/27/06 - HOUSTON) - Eight Hurricane Katrina evacuees who are members of rival New Orleans gangs were arrested in connection with 11 recent murders and other violent crimes, Houston police said Friday.

Investigators with the newly formed Houston Police Gang Murder Squad said they are still looking for three suspects.

"The safety of the city of Houston, its citizens and as well as some of the evacuees depends on us arresting these individuals as soon as possible," Police Chief Harold Hurtt Hurtt said.

The Houston-area crime rate spiked sharply in the last few months of 2005, and police officials have attributed some of that to Katrina evacuees.

The 11 suspects are also accused of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Nine of the murders happened in the city's high-crime southwest side, while the other two were in the Houston suburb of Pasadena. All the murders have occurred since November.

Authorities said they believe the killings can be attributed to rival gangs who have set up shop in Houston after evacuating New Orleans following the Aug. 29 hurricane.

SW Houston is not a convent....my husband lived in an apartment in SW Houston right after he graduated from college.....it was nicknamed Murder Southwest......if that gives you an idea of what he was dealing with at the young age of 21..fresh out of LSU in 1989.

The crime rate in that area was high to begin with...the rival gangs from NO are making it worse. Imagine the MS-13 guys and gangs from N.O.....not pretty. they are not going bak to NO. They dont have anyplace to go. SW Houston is just their cup of tea......unfortunately. The majority of my maternal family resides in NW Houston, but that does not mean they are any safer than they used to be.

When I lived in Boise, most families didnt lock their doors and some of my friends thought it was so cute that I locked up and set my alarm everytime I left my house. I reminded them that I have lived in Houston and Austin, Texas where people watch you to see if you secure your residence and when they see you dont....you are more than likely road kill.

Sorry for being so glum.....but that's life.

I now live and live the NW part of houston. Im actully out of the city but not the county. I love it over here.

but crime is everywhere, and even here. BUt its not as bad as the SW side.
