Big problems at the big house

January 31, 2006 - A Lucas County Corrections Officer at the jail was fired for an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. And in a totally unrelated incident, detectives are investigating a stabbing inside the jail.

Jail officials say the officer was quote "Overly friendly" with the inmate. They say that incident, and the stabbing behind these bars are major safety concerns, and can lead to bad situations.

Former Lucas County Corrections Officer Jackie Speiser was fired after officials say she was caught having inappropriate relationship with inmate Adam Carney. He was locked up for burglary. Administrators became aware of the jailhouse romance after other officers voiced concerns. "She was not a loud to work the floor where he was housed at." But the relationship didn't end there.

John Rogers from internal affairs stated that they "Ordered a shake down of the cell and that point in time there were a bunch of letters that were confiscated from him." Internal Affairs says her love letters are a violation of jail policy.

It's appeared almost to be a boyfriend girlfriend type of situation when you read the letters. They're very personal, talking about their feelings, her feelings a situation we need to put an end to."

The jailhouse romance isn't the only problem. Administrators say inmate Benjamin Smith was stabbed by inmate Raul Izquierdo with a piece of wire he got from a mop bucket, used to clean the cells.

Lt. Don Atkinson from the Lucas Co. Sheriff's office said, "Evidently in this case there was an employee who didn't properly do his job and because they should have noticed when they put that mob bucket and ringer in there when it came out, there were parts of it that were missing."

It happened in the maximum-security housing area. Investigators say guards failed to pay attention to detail.

"In this particular case I don't know if they retrieved the part he used to fashion into a weapon or if it was left in there."

Detectives have sent the case to the prosecutor's office for review.

Internal affairs will decide if action will be taken against the jail guards in connection with the mop bucket incident.

As for the officer who was fired. She's appealing the department's decision to let her go.

This wasn't the first security breach at the Lucas County Jail.

Former jail counselor Marion Crosby is still behind bars today, sentenced for bribery.

In 2003, the sheriff says Crosby delivered a gun to convicted murderer Prentiss Williams, who then fired three shots inside the jail

Also, in 2003 a judge sentenced a corrections officer to two years in prison for sneaking drugs into the Lucas County Jail.

Scott Secord was also fired from his job.
