hahaha, I have tried avoiding using English phrases up until now, but I am forever googling some of the things that you guys say, so I thought I would turn the tables a bit.
Not only that but Bcup told me to just be myself and type what I want.

have fun hijacking it....
Oh we are, this is what we do best, hope you don't really mind BBB.
If you go back to the start of the thread, you will notice that it would of practically been a dead thread after the first three posts.
Post 1, BBB asked a question. Post 2, MP answered it. Post 3, BBB acknowledged the answer.
Thread should now fade away into the corner of TOP, but it didn't because we all kept it going.
It could of been one of those threads that never got past the first post, which always makes me feel sorry for the person who started it, but as it was it turned into a very active thread so quit complaining MP and enjoy it!
Not trying to be a smart ass here at all.....You seem to really dislike Norton AV, other than the millions of files, folders, and registry keys it installs....can I ask why? I had Mcafee once, hated that because it just wasn't user friendly and it didn't do the job (i got a virus within the first week i was ever online). I switched to Norton AV and I haven't had a virus since? I am really interested in your take on Norton since I rely on it to keep my PC virus free......

KatScratch, any Norton product is a resource hog, which slows down a computer beyond belief, also most of the computers that I work on in my spare time as a tech type hobby that have really bad infections are normally running Norton, alternatives, even free alternatives can prove to be so much better. The war against viruses, malware, hackers etc is a war that will never be won but with the right help it can be fought against, which is what MP and myself is trying to do.
As far as resources/speed, my PC has been fine really....I also use an adware/spyware remover, I have Norton Internet Security, and NeoWatch (I know they did away with it, but I love the interface, tracer, and little extras it does) I haven't experienced any problems, should i really be concerned here?
Etrust AV....never used it, don't know anyone using it. I guess I need to do some reading....

Norton is a big resource hog. The files are bloated up to 60mb for a complete install. and it also takes a lot of RAM slowing systems down, especialy older machines. It has a poor anti-virus diffinition and only offers updates once a week at best. Norton also includes rootkits to hide certain diffinition files from windows itself. the install of the rootkits has become a hiding place for viruses using the files to hide behind. the installation of the rootkits has been frowned upon by security experts since it's discovery. also when uninstalling Norton it will break certain aspects of Windows that includes corruption of Permissions and Bits.
hmm.....I have had to uninstall Norton every other year or so when I buy the new version, so far I guess I have been the lucky one. I do use their removal tool from their website though when I do the uninstall. Could it be because I run Windows 2000 Pro? 2000 Pro has been rock solid for me (way better than the old win 98).

here is a screen shot of my task manager..notice i have only 206 for the commit charge. and only 32 processes running. how much is your computer using?
I game and I play a lot of older games, XP didn't like that, it refused to play some of my games at all, I switched to Win 2000 Pro and it has never blinked at my new or old games. That's really the main reason I have Win 2000 Pro. Win 98 just couldn't keep up any more and I never even wanted to try Millenium, too many of my friends made that mistake!

Rootkits are super hidden files that can contain trojans and other malware. Rootkits are hard to detect becouse they are small files and are not even detected by Windows
excerpt taking from Wikipedia:
A rootkit is often used to hide utilities used to abuse a compromised system. These often include so-called "backdoors" to help the attacker subsequently access the system more easily. For example, the rootkit may hide an application that spawns a shell when the attacker connects to a particular network port on the system. Kernel rootkits may include similar functionality. A backdoor may also allow processes started by a non-privileged user to execute functions normally reserved for the superuser. All sorts of other tools useful for abuse can be hidden using rootkits. This includes tools for further attacks against computer systems the compromised system communicates with such as sniffers and keyloggers. A common abuse is to use a compromised computer as a staging ground for further abuse. This is often done to make the abuse appear to originate from the compromised system or network instead of the attacker. Tools for this can include denial-of-service attack tools, tools to relay chat sessions, and e-mail spam attacks.
A recent example where a rootkit was used on commercial CDs for digital rights management purposes is the 2005 Sony CD copy protection controversy.
Wow....thank you for the info and the website. It sounds like you probably do this for a living, so I won't ask you to keep doing it on your time off. I will do some reading on that site Sparky listed...thanks again.

hmm, sounds like you have a few things running at once so that will bring up your processes up and of course your RAM. Norton will have up to 7 processes running at the same time. that is why it's widely regarded as a resource hog. and also you possibly may have a few unneeded processes running in the Windows services but i dont know how you maintain your computer.
My video card, ATI Radion, has 3 processes running as does my Sound Blaster Live. I have a wireless netowrk card that runs 2 processes, Norton is running 7 (as you said) Neo watch is running as a service, my HP printer/scanner has 2 services, but i exit them when I'm not using it. Windows 2000 has some services running in the background for every single browser I have open....the list is long...45 processes (I multi-task well). I have over a gig of ram in this lil puppy so it really hasn't bogged on me yet.
I noticed the speed problem with Norton IS when I had dial-up, but since I have broadband, it hasn't been an issue anymore, not for what I do on the internet.
I'm running that scanner you posted....so far so good!

thats good that you are running the scan..i'm betting that its finding mostly tracking cookies, i wouldnt be surprised if it finds a trojan or 2. when the scan is over read it over carefully. if you see anything that says Key Logger let me know as you will have to take immediate action since keyloggers copy's steals passwords and credit card #'s and the like. but dont go into panick mode just yet
