Okay I was at my friends house today and glimpsed thru the book "Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement" seems like a good book... Anyone here read it?

I thought the difficulties cops experience from the job resulted from a whole array of factors, but so far it seems like the author is implying that they all result from the phenomenon of hypervigilance. I haven't finished the book yet, but the first few chapters weren't what I expected.

Great book, very useful. Read it as a rookie and then about every two years afterwards. It gives you a great perspective on the LE world..... I also have been to 3 of Dr. Gilmartins conferences, even better in person....

Pacman, could you tell me the most important points in the book that I should be paying attention to? Like I said it wasn't what I expected, and I'm probably not getting as much out of it as I could be. What about the book helped you the most?

I think that the most important thing about the book is that it teaches you to separate your personal life from the job. Assuming you are an LEO and fairly new in the career, you will find that all of your "non-police" friends will begin to look at you differently as you will them. Police work is like no other and if you let it "rule" your life both on and off duty you won't make it very long or you will be miserable in both aspects.
I have read the book three times and I get different things out of it each time. If you are new in LE you probably won't understand it too much as you haven't transformed yourself from the citizen way of thinkning to the LE way of thinking however; it seems to apply more the longer you progress.
That about covers the basics, feel free to ask more questions.
