Just so you don't have to do the research, here is my original post. OH, and at the bottom there is a post from CTR, someone who has served this Country in the military. We all have our missions and goals in life, none no better then others, but experience has some value in this situation. A follow up question is not an attack!

The Navy sucks for Law Enforcement. They are the Navy Command is the most restrictive when it come to letting their people do police work. The Navy has led the way to converting to a civilian police operations, (meaning sailors aren't doing the police work) yet they still have their hands tied as to what they are allowed to do. The bright side of the Navy is that few sailors have been killed in our current war(s).
IF you join the Marines or Army as an MP, you are most certainly going to go to war. I admire anyone who wants to serve their Country. My Army unit (MP) went to Desert Sheild/Storm, it was not pretty, it was not fun. Don't go in thinking that you are going to be sitting all clean and smelling good in some police car somewhere stateside waiting to get involved in the next big capper on post. All branches of the military have been mandated by the Pentagon to convert LE operations to civilian forces to allow the service memebers to concentrate on combat related duties and training. The MP corps for both the Army and the Marines have long histories of being understaffed, and with the recruiting problems going on now, it is even worse.
The Airforce has two very distinct different MOS's (job) for SP, ones mission is LE, the others in Flightline security and combat related. Again, the AF has been mandated to convert LE operations, so I would guess that many of them are being forced to change jobs. I don't know this for a fact, I have not spoken to an AF SP in along time.
If I were making this decision, I would go in the Coast Guard. TONS of valuable experience, they do LE daily (providing you are not dumb enough to pick "cook" as your job).

Toby, I'm with most of the respondents here. This might be good for you. You're young and nothing really to tie you down. Plus if you have a degree from college it is most likely you could go into basic as an E-3 or an E-2 instead of an E-1 like everyone else. Translation--more pay and higher rank. The military likes team players. Also it would be easier to get that LE job you've been wanting because a lot of police depts out there look for previous military experience and that could be the edge you need to make yourself look better that all of the rest of the applicants. LE wants to be sure that their potential applicants can stand on their own and make the right decisions. I also would be more inclined to go with the Army or Marines. Sure you might see combat but Army and Marines generally get more breaks and respect than the rest. Except around Navy bases. Listen to USAcop, for once he has said something right.

On a more serious note, I do know allot of people that were in the navy, and during the summers I deal with the coast guard a great deal. That being said, if you want to serve (just to serve) then the navy probably is the safest branch to serve in with the type of wars we fight these days. Now, if you are wanting to serve for the training,,,, well let me tell you, the coast guard are nothing but cop's that float with bigger guns,,,,,,, and attitudes. Perfect training ground.
