Thoughts or commets
To the editor:
Re: "Soldiers of misfortune," March 17.
I have to say that peaceniks annoy me. I'm curious to know why peaceniks must wear their ignorance of world affairs as a badge of honour?
As I look at my daughter's face I want nothing more for her but a life of peace. Yet, that is not the world we live in. Peaceniks can scream about George Bush and Steven Harper, and illegal wars over oil, but the fact of the matter is that "we" as an educated and compassionate society should have been there a long time ago.
U.S. foreign policy, Christianity, and oil had nothing to do with the countless women that the Taliban executed for terrible offences like teaching girls to read. And where were the peaceniks when Saddam Hussein launched chemical laden missiles into Kurdish villages?
If they want to protest something, may I suggest protesting Pakistan? According to the CBC, over 3,000 women are currently imprisoned for adultery.
You see, in Pakistan, where Sharia law rules, a woman who is raped must have four male witnesses testify on her behalf that she was raped.
If she informs the police that she was raped and doesn't have four male witnesses, she has just incriminated herself as an adulteress and will be stoned to death or imprisoned. Isn't that worth a protest?
Or, do you suggest that the world and Canada should just stand by and protest behind placards for how many more genocides, like the one in Rwanda.
To quote John Stewart Mill-"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
Dear peaceniks, I dare to say, the people that make that difficult decision to join the Canadian forces to fight in war for what they, and our leaders believe in, are better people than you.
Our forefathers, who fought for this country, must be rolling in their graves.
