The reason i say outlaw it is cause no one ever follows the rules. Talking is not so bad but i have seen people texting/dialing while trying to drive through busy traffic. It will be outlawed in Ohio eventually and I agree. I have small kids and have had to cuss people out for acting stupid while trying to talk and drive. Yes it is a few that ruin it for all but, give an inch and they take a mile.

OMG.....my kids don't always follow the rules to board games either, but geeze! Simple freedoms and you want to just hand them away????? Please correct me if I'm wrong here Plush....because you have kids and don't want to cuss at the idiot drivers, Cell Phones while driving should be outlawed???? Have yah tried thinkin it instead of saying it outloud if you're that worried about what they are hearing coming from your mouth? There's times I get a mental image of ramming "grama driver" down the road and over a cliff....saves me a lot of yelling?

Well....not only make up, but how about eating or drinking?  Hell...how about HAVING kids in the car???  THAT is a distraction!!!!!

I just think that banning something like that is a knee jerk reaction also known as 'feel-good' legislation.  It seldom works, yet pisses people off by making their lives harder because of the idiots who do idiotic things.

Well as much as I would like to say that I do not cuss in front of my kids, I can't. I just think that if you want to talk on the phone that bad, buy a headset. 50$ for a headset to keep from causing an accident is a smart move. And I can't blame all the stupid drivers on cell phones.

I agree.  Every time I have a close call in traffic the driver is always on a cell phone.

Just to clear it up. I am in no way knocking the people that are coordinated enough to talk and drive. It's just that the dumbasses who can not, ruin it for the rest.

This same driver is probably a worse driver when they are off the phone and concentrating on getting where they are going.    Now they are calculating whether or not they can cut you off and survive.

Simple truth is  most drivers suck....    it's all about them getting where they are going and screw the next guy.

We have a cell phone company sponsor hands free system, go in and ask them if you can have one. Well you got it, here it is. No matter if that's your company or not.

I completely agree.  All the more reason why they shouldn't be allowed any further distractions.

With all the body parts I've seen going down the road and the things being done to them,  I'd venture to say people will find something to play with when it comes down to it.

For me it's more important that we remain a free nation,   not become a police state.

If I were to make a law though,  it would be that people were to held accountable for what they did or caused to happen.   Instead of what we have now,   lawyers sucking the life out of the deepest pockets.

You see.   It's not just the cell phone being used while driving that is at stake here.

I think it was Ben Franklin that said something like this...

If you choose security over freedom,   you end up with neither

The way I take this is that government will never be able to secure your life from cradle to grave no matter how much freedom they take away from the masses.    Shit happens

i absolutely agree.

I would love to be able to use my cell phone while driving because I am often out in the middle of the night needing directions, and it would be easier to be directed while driving.  But I personally don't mind giving up that freedom if it means I'll feel safer on the streets and won't always have the stress of having to compensate for others' bad driving (at least that resulting from cell phone use).  I don't at all feel like I'm choosing security over freedom, any more than I do when I am restricted by other laws which control my driving.

Probably, but I don't see the point in not making laws just because some people won't follow them.

And I don't see the point of feel good legislation

Can you guess how many millions of  tax dollars go into making one law??

If any law which some people will not obey is labelled as feel-good legislation, then I guess that pertains to all laws.  I'm not sure what you're getting at.

The law your talking about is already there.   Doing anything other then driving is already illegal.    Both hands are supposed to be on the wheel.

The politicians will make the law to get reelect,  the states will use the law for revenue,   the fine will be set low enough that people won't care if they get caught.   Lots of time and money spent on nothing

Well, that's ridiculous then.

If it's the law that two hands be on the wheel, then I wish the police would start enforcing that.

Look at the number of deaths each year where speed is a factor...  do people stop speeding even after they get a ticket???   no....

set the fine at 1000.00   first offense..   second offence...loss of license.   how many people do you think would speed then.   How many lives would be saved.

the other side....

How many politicians would get reelected.    No more speeding.   no revenue for the state... then they have to raise taxes..   again...   kicked out of office.

That's only because of people like you who think there should be a LAW about it for god sakes!. Think about it.

You have my respect! Full hearted!

I should note, the new saying is "If you choose SAFETY over freedom, you deserve neither!"

It's good to see there are still some people out there that look at the big picture and not just 2 foot in front of them.!

And entre new  has good points too.   Anyone one using the road should expect full concentration from other drivers.   I just don't see it happening in the real world.

Right! I'm a realist and a bit of an extremist! That means I believe "If you don't like the way things are on the road, stay the fuck off of them!"

Why? Because like you said, anything, anyone does to try to make something better, only feeds a bigger problem somewhere else!

Heh heh.  Sorry Eltascon, but I can relate.  I often have to read your posts a few times before I can figure out what you're trying to say.

I think those who can't drive while talking on cell phones ruin it for the rest of us by making the roads unsafe, and by making us compensate for their bad driving, not because people "think there should be a law about it".

Some people should not be allowed on the sidewalk because they are to stupid to walk, talk and chew gum at the same time.   But we let them anyway...

Usually they don't.....cept the one that will eventually screw up and walk out into traffic and cause an accident.

In my occupation...   depending on what study you look at,   up to 80% of the wrecks between cars and truck are caused by the cars.

Solution....   more regulation on trucks..

What does it solve.....

More points of law for lawyers to suck money from the trucking industry.

Does the new law save lives....   no...   just makes  Delivering food and other comities more expensive for me,   then I pass that onto you.

Also it make good driver quit because it is not worth the legal risk any more.

And they do nothing to make car drivers more responsible around trucks....ie....feel good legislation

First, I agree with your concerns, just not your solution.  No law anywhere can protect you or your kids while you are in a car.  Sad but true.  Agg Murder is strictly illegal and severely punished, but people still do it.

I highlighted what I think is the solution to your concern.  It is the drivers of the other cars.  You can be defensive when you drive....but that only goes so far.  If the idiots would pay attention, ie not dial while driving if they can't do it without endangering themselves or others..THEY should not do so.  As it happens, I can.  Ask anyone who is speaking to me while I'm driving....there are moments when they must repeat what they say because of something some idiot did that absorbs my concentration from the conversation.  For me, it is not just a matter of coordination...but more importantly one of priorities.

Little Sally needs a ticket, I don't.

(edit) Oh...and the hands free deal...they have that in one of the cruisers....you must look AWAY from the road to dial....you can't put the phone up to your line of sight so you can glance at it without turnng your head.  (and it doesn't work for shit if you are moving I might add...one way mic cuts out for travel noise)
