What was it like for you to drive on the freeway your first time?
The reason why I am asking is because since I've had my license (last Oct.). I have not driven on the freeway long distance. Tomorrow, I will be spending time with my SO and I don't want him to pick me up at the BART station.
I want to try driving out there. Just so I can try it and do it. I know I can but I just want to hear what others have to say about it. Since getting my DL, I have not had any accidents. I am always watching the road and other drivers.
Thanks..

Well, my first freeway experience was alone in Houston. I had driven in my medium size town before and always took side roads to get where I was going......In Houston I lived on campus for awhile and did not have a car and shuttled or walked everywhere. That changed when I moved off campus.
My first taste of freeway driving was not scary ......believe it or not. Fortunately, it was not during rush hour Houston nonsense and I made it home ok. I was a pro in a number of weeks seeing that my aunts lived 30-40 minutes from where I lived and I visited them often. I had my first and only accident downtown trying to make a left turn from the wrong lane.....silly goose! I was late and not thinking...mistake #1!
Just keep your eyes peeled and be aware of idiots who think they own the road...dont be afraid to change lanes or exit or merge...thats when people get annoyed and honk .....you will do fine!

When your coming on, DO NOT STOP. PET PEEVE. They should move out of your way, if not then drive on the shoulder. You shouldn't have to worry about the person in front of you.
Also check your blind spots.

Where does he live? Do you take the Posey Tube out or do you take High Street bridge?
You want to stay away from 880 as much as you can. Semis, crazy drivers and pot holes. Plus the amount of traffic is awful. If you take 880 go at a time away from rush hour.
I hate 880 and WILL not drive it because of the crap on the road. 580 is less vehicles, NO SEMI'S...even if it is out of the way.
I started driving at 16, but I remember the toughest thing for me was learning to gauge traffic and merge properly.....my instinct was to stop, although I never did.
I spend roughly 4 hours on my daily commute (round trip), and to add to the advice previously given, I can only say to pay attention to traffic and sudden slow-downs.

The most important thing is to watch the other drivers. Turn signals have become a thing of the past it seems. And I am not sure were you are but I know in Cali the motorcycles can ride between the cars, so don't be poppin your door open without looking. Not that you need to open it on the freeway, but you never know.
Remember use that SUV to get to the lane you wanna have. Your bigger then 80 % of the vehicles out there.
Yes, you do have a bigger car than most, but don't be an ass about it. Remember there are some people who get set off by simple things like bigger cars being road hogs ....people are crazy.....never underestimate what a mommy in a mini- van will do if you endanger her children with your bohemeth-mobile.

Sure thing...weenie boy. You wish you had my email. Before I got my suv I drove his while he was gone. Wise ASS!! I made it over to his place just fine. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I was so excited that I made it over here. I am still here and will be going home tomorrow sometime. It didn't take very long to get here like 45 minutes.
Thank god for my big SUV. That is the reason why I like big trucks. My phone was kept off until I got to where I was headed.

freeways are not my problem
My first fear when driving was the Causway across Lake Pontchartrain
Catch a typical LA summer rainstorm with water spouts, or a typical spring morning with fog so thick you can slice it...add 30,000 drivers applying makeup, talking on mobiles or reading the Picyaune...fun fun fun :(
Post Katrina has increase daily traffic on it to about 45- 50 thousand a day. TWO crashes over the side in past month
