German Shepherds

Okay, so I maybe getting a six week old German Shepherd female pup. I was wondering what members here have a GS and any tips you got about training and raising them.

If I get her, I will be sure to post pics. I have always wanted a german shepherd and will be excited as hell if my wish comes true.

RE: German Sheperds

I our case...we got him his own place to sleep.  A large plastic tub.  Ignore the whining to get out when its time to go to bed.  We let ours sleep in our room...in HIS tub.  After about 2 nights...the crying stopped and he was cool.

In fact...he ran across that same tub about 4 months later...and was completely disappointed to find he could no longer fit inside to take a nap  8)

start right awa with house training.

always remember--- training a dog is alot like training a man. (well...)

positive reinforcement. use a word that youw ill always use.  potty.

when ladybug goes out..."go potty....poopers.....and always while training...

when she goes, give a cookie. what i do...if she pees only  half if she does 100%..a whole

LB will starre you DOWN for her cookie. she knows.

i think a tub is good, but ladybug sleeps with me.    GS are great dogs.

Crate training is a must.  Don't give in to the crying and wimpering.  She will feel "safe" in her crate.

SaraAnn, my golden ret. starts off on our bed.  Then she slides off to say good night to J, then she walks over to my side and insists that I get up and lock her in her crate.  If I shut the door, she noses it open..she has to hear the click of the lock before she settles down.

If you use a crate, NEVER use it as a punishment.  It's great for potty training your pup.  You have to start with a small one, so she doesn't have enough room to potty in it. (THEY WON"T PEE WHERE THEY SLEEP)  Get a bigger one, as she grows.

They have the book German Shepards for dummies....it would be worth your wild to purchase it.  It tells you the ins and outs of the breed, what to expect etc.  http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/productCd-0764552805.html

And her name is...................?

hey Photo a Dummies book for Shepherds would be a good start.  I have a shepherd, I do not crate him.  He has his own blanket, where I decide to put his blanket is where he sleeps. If I wash his blanket and fail to give him another one he sleeps in my bed.  A shepherds number one bad habit is whining.  My shepherd is a rescue dog, he was already trained. I hope you are able to get her and good luck...... they are great dogs.

Haha, so how old does a dog have to be to retire?

That's cool you get to keep him. I wouldn't know where they would send him anyway. He would be lost without you, I am sure.

I wonder how he would adjust with the new working dog...

Also, since he would be retired (lol) would he get to keep his medical benefits so you dont have to pay for the vet and stuff?

once i sign for him he wont get any health benefits but i know all the local vets so that wont be a problem.

it's going to be tough adjusting him to my new partner since my old one is animal aggressive
