Ok, first off you talk about his being "over the top" as far as the stop was concerned and how that pissed you off. We don't know who you are when we stop a car, and if you are far from the big cities, then he is also probably far from back up! All the more reason to be extra safe! You may have thought it was over the top, for him he's thinking about seeing his child grow up.
When I pull a car over I have my hand on my gun just about every single time. I am not in tactical shooting postion, but as I approach the car, my hand will be on my gun.
"Police officer" is the only profession that people look to hurt or kill on purpose. Yes, people actually plan on assaulting and/or killing us.
So, then being pissed of about how the stop was miss handled (in your opinion) you "lost it" when he asked you about your new licence.
I agree that he comment about not getting out of the ticket was unprofessional, but do you think it may not have occurred if you had been courteous throughout the entire traffic stop?
So, did the officer "power trip" or respond poorly to an asshole client?
BTW, I still love yeah Kat, I am just playing devil's advocate.
We all see things, or the same thing, extremely different based off our own experiences in life.
Nurses are good I was one myself meany years ago looking after the old,s ./.. Most Dr's yes some lawenforcenment yes But the one's who reallly take the cake are POLITICISATION.

I can say I have only had one bad encounter with a cop. The bitch at the shoe store is far worse than any cop I have ever encountered.

Sorry SB Have to disagree with ya there.....
I've been attacked way to many times in my truck to believe that.
Seen way to many holes in truck wind shields from shit dropped off an overpass and bullet holes in the sides of cabs.
I've had to many idiots in cars do stupid shit in front of me while shooting me a bird trying to cause me to wreck.
While cops do have a need to be concerned for their safety, so do other professions, like mine, when I have loads worth millions of dollars on my trailer. Yeah... I call you for help when I have someone on my tail, and the cops come, with backup and guns...
Me, I'm stuck there without a gun in the line of fire because lawmakers won't allow me my second amendment rights from state to every other state so that you can be safer on your job

Ever think it may just be your driving?
I will agree with you only in part, many of those things probably have more to do with bad timing. There are probably more minivans that have boulders dropped on them then trucks. Though, I am talking out of my ass on that one, because I've never had a file like that, and I am relying on news reports.
On the other hand, we had Mounties assassinated last year, when an asshole came back to a crime scene with an assault rifle specifically to murder them.
And to many times unsuspecting police officer walk to ask for the licence and registration and are shot on the roadside.

I totally agree.... Look at movie stars... stalked and attacked/killed all the time. Doctors deal with wacko's all the time..... could go on but I think you get my point...
Cops are not the only profession that get attacked and/or killed because of their job....but it helps their ego to believe so.
Butter....have you ever met an asshole truck driver....not counting me that is
Lol, no I haven't. I have a heavy bias toward cops, though, that's what I grew up with. Plus, the interaction that I've had with non-family cops has always been positive. Even the one time that I got a speeding ticket (many years ago).

There are many jobs out there that carry with them higher than average degrees of risk. SB is right, people do actually plan to injure or kill cops. Regarding your comment, maybe I'm wrong but I don't think that it's the egos of cops that makes them believe it, it's the reality that it occurs with far more frequency than in other professions. No, cops are not the only professionals to be attacked and killed because of their job, but in many (not all) cases when it does happen I think it's because they're doing their job. And that makes it even worse.

As, I was sitting looking up stats, I totally forgot that I am going to Canada's first police (murder) funeral of 2006. He was assaulted in 2001 and it took until last week for him to die.
I challenge you to find the names of 10 movie stars that were killed by unknown assailants since sound was introduced. -- Edited by SB at 23:57, 2006-04-26
10 movie stars killed because they reached stardom since sound.....not a problem... just watch TV or listen to XM radio.... their stories are on all the time. But keep in mind here, these people did not choose a profession that put them in harms way.
My point was.... police are not the only people attacked or killed because of their profession. And yes.... as a cop you need to watch your back.
Nothing more.... nothing less
As far as truck drivers go. I think the number of drivers killed while on duty last year was over 700. And judging from my experience with pissed off drivers out there, some of those accidents were not accidents. Think about it, would you tell the cop standing there that you got pissed and caused some one to wreck and die???
People want electricity, but they don't want the plant in their back yard
People want cell phone coverage, but don't put that tower where they can see it from their house
People want groceries and other goods readily available at their local market, but to have to deal with that big truck on the road or to put a truck stop in their town is unthinkable.
And yes, people want cops, but to police the other guy, not them
Perfectly sane people will have bouts of insanity from time to time. And they will become aggressive against what ever gets in their way. Usually I find that to be me. Simply because I run the speed limit and the fact that my truck will never be able to maneuver as quick as a car.
Your lucky as I see it. Only the nuttiest go after you as a cop, Average, everyday people will do things to me because I have no authority to do anything back to them and they simply have no respect for my profession. ie... they can cut me off, slam on their brakes and cause me to swerve, possible roll over, or just dump my load inside the trailer causing thousands of dollars of damage. And what can I do about it??? Nothing.... How often does this happen to me... about once a week
Cut you off in your squad car and slam the brakes on trying to cause you to wreck.... You call for back up and take them out... tickets, fines, and the such. But here again, normally only the bad guys, not the average every day citizen on there way home from work.
Your statement if I remember correctly said that no other profession had people killed because of their profession. I think that statement is untrue. Does your profession draw an unusually large number of deaths in this manner, probably.
I also think that police departments worldwide use that statement to help with things such as getting funding for new equipment, implementing new laws, and generally looking good in the public eye.
And I also think that some cops, not all, use that statement to boost their ego.
I also know that some drivers use their 80 thousand pound rigs to force their Way through traffic and boost their egos. I think ego boosting has something to do with being human.
"The statements and opinions contained in this communication do not necessarily reflect the official position of the Commission regarding these issues."

First off, where I live, that cop has no fears of being shot. Second, I was quite nice through out the ordeal (which is not my nature). Third, I have been pulled over for speeding before and NEVER has a Sherrif, Trooper, or City PD ever used their little PA to tell me to put my hands on the steering wheel, let alone walk tall and in charge with their hand on their gun.....it just don't happen out here in my parts! If you could have seen his expressions and the way he snapped off his sun glasses....it was a sad display. His ego eventually got the best of him and he was transferred to a different county. He wasn't well liked even by his fellow officers!

That's exactly the attitude that gets police officers killed. Small town or big city, life is dynamic and anything can happen, anywhere, at anytime. It used to seem that most fatal shootings happened in small towns, and woth 25 yr guys near retirement. Why? Because they went to work for twenty years thinking, "Nothing ever happens here!" And guess what? They ended up shot roadside with no armour.
Go to ODMP and check your city, or a few nearby, you might be surprised with what you find.
It sounds like your guy was an asshole, but 100 things could have went through his mind, from I am going to practice a high risk style stop with this woman to keep my skills up, to something about the way you stopped that made him think something was up.
He probably was an asshole, but my experience with policing that spans almost 14 yrs now, I have rarely meet, or observed an asshole cop. There have been people that policed with a different style than me - too much social work/counselor or not enough, etc.
See if this counts as an asshole cop. (Picture this) – 8:30pm, December 24th (Christmas Eve). Man and wife with two kids in back of car. Drive through a tiny butt lick town that is only ½ mile wide with maybe 25 houses in it. Speed limit was 35. We were doing 37. Half way in town, (which has no lights, no stop signs, basically nothing in it except this cop), and he hits the lights. I stop. Open door and start to get out. (Back then that was what you were supposed to do.) Half way out of the car I hear this FREEEEEEZE”. I froze. Then I heard “GET BACK IN YOUR CAR AND KEEP YOUR HANDS WERE I CAN SEE THEM.” Stunned, I did what he said. He walked up to the car, hand on gun! Looking in my back seat around my kids who were 8, and 10. And proceeds to tell me I was doing 37 in a 35. Instantly I am pissed. I said, “WHAT?” He repeated. I said, “Listen robo,,,, Its fucking Christmas eve, I’ve got kids in the car and you want to pull a gun and bitch about 37 in a 35? KISS MY ASS! Give me a ticket, IF YOU CAN, and I will be on my way for you to remain being a miserable asshole! The man wigged out. I mockingly did the “bla bla bla” thing. He looked at me and stared for about 2 min. Which felt like an hour. Then he said just slow it down next time. And walk away. I dove off and never have gone through the fucking town AGAIN!. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ABOUT!?

ummmm you were technically breaking the law? 2 mph is kinda dumb. But none the less you were over the limit. I would have never spoken to one like that though. I guess some people can get away with it. I would be cuffed and stuffed with my luck.
I've never met a complete asshole to date, except my SO (LE) who is batting (4/4). Many of the cops I've encountered might have had the ( 1/4) body language that announced "Asshole" befor they even opened their mouth. But otherwise they were fine. Others caused my jaw to drop once they (1/4) opened their mouths. Some just seem to (1/4) handle the mechanics of a situation in a very unprofessional manner. And yet others seemed absolutely decent until you read the (1/4) incident report... and then you have to wonder was this dude even listening???? What ouigi board did he use to pull that story out of??? (I loose complete respect when I am severely misquoted & there is reversal of major incidents in a report...and then that report is submitted as evidence as the truth.... and the officer wont correct the wrong report info... [exagerated example: "No, officer.. I'm the one that GOT SHOT in the foot...I DID NOT do the shooting.... SEE MY FOOT??? " and he still wont correct his report! ] LOL In fairness I'd immagine that there is tons of paperwork and it gets to be a drag, but isn't accuracy important too?) ( spose that is just part of the shit that happens on any job I guess... maybe I should be thankful the dude is willing to be a cop and put up with all the crap that entails, instead of going for the $ and glory of being a brain surgeon! ) So I guess I fall into the catagory of : I've only met 1 (LE) that was a complete asshole.
Actually, I think "parents" contain the biggest ratio of assholes... and yes parenting is a profession.... the toughest job you'll ever do, for the least pay and appriciation and recognition, always inthe public eye and censure, Sometimes you can do the most exemplry job and the final product still sucks....and flip side..you never are quite sure of the best method to apply until it is too late to do anything diffferently.

What that was about was officer safety, and more and likely legal jusification to stop you to see if you were impaired. Cops get killed on Christmas eve, Easter, and on Thankgiving.
And Impaired rates skyrocket in and around Christmas. I would have thought you'd be happy knowning that the police were out doing their jobs on Christmas eve? The next car he stopped my have been a drunk that could have killed your family.
As for yelling at you for getting out of your car? Go anywhere in the US or Canada, and try and get out of your car and see what happens.. It won't matter if it's Christmas in the great white north, or Easter in Las Vegas, getting out of car is a major safety issue, for both the officer and you, and your going to get hollered at to get back in your car.
Two things go through our heads. The first being am I going to get ambushed? (we don't know if you have just murdered someone or have a criminal history and 100lbs of dope in your car, and you're willing kill us to evade capture) And secondly, how are we going to explain to your wife, kids, and our bosses, how we allowed you to get out of the car (while being detained under the motor vehicle act) and you were struck and killed by another motorist.
Do, see where I am coming from? That's why I get so annoyed with Cop bashing. Or maybe it's just that I am insane for hoping that I can explain why we do the things we do, and that people will say, "Shit, maybe that cop wasn't being an asshole after all."
SB...I have a lot of friends who are cops (state, city, and county) and even they said he was a dick! LOL..... Most of the cops I have met or been pulled over by are pretty cool considering their jobs. I'm not a cop hater, I just hate ego/power trippin people in general. It doesn't matter to me if it's their job or just who they are, I don't like it!

Kat, you're right, he probably was an asshole, but policing can be clicky and he might not have fit in very well. (Maybe because he was an asshole!)
Scarecrow, incident reports that aren't going anywhere are sometimes "written off" in a manner that is somewhere between the truth and a slight bend in it. Sometimes that are written in a way to get concluded and past the supervisor. Most of the time they are go no where files, but you might have an idiot supervisor that's going to want you to invesigate the hell out of it.
We have one (who is actually the nicest guy you'd ever meet) that we call "Statement Steph". He wants statements taken on almost every file, and it's crazy. And some of the those statements require calling people into the office to do it on video. It's way to much work for something that has no chance of going anywhere.
So, some stuff sometimes doesn't quite tell the whole story. Can you imagine talking a whole audiotaped statement, then sending it to be transcribed, over something like a bicycle skid mark? The nut ball security guard wanted me to track the kid down and charge him. So the file read something like this..members attended, spoke with security, small bicycle skidmark observed on patio, suspect goa (gone on arrival) patrols for the suspect neg. CH. (Concluded here)
What happened was the guards requst for charges with left out, because the supervisor may have then asked about video surveilance tapes, whether a statement was taken form the gaurd, that stuff had to be lodged as evidence, and for a what? A kid that made a skidmark on his bike?
ummmm you were technically breaking the law? 2 mph is kinda dumb. But none the less you were over the limit. I would have never spoken to one like that though. Agreed.
I don't see where either cop described here behaved like assholes on the stop. If Kat had other information which showed her that her cop was an asshole, then that's different.
