Tipping your newspaper carrier

Since Photo started the thread on stylists, I thought I would add this one.

For those of you who have the newspaper delivered to you, How much do you tip the newspaper carrier?  Do they provide Good Service?  I know its a dying profession with all the newspaper companies going on-line, but I figure I will keep throwing newspapers until it is no longer profitable.  From those that do tip, I usually get $5.00 a month with extra gratuities at Christmas.  I do porch a lot of my customers from the car, but that is only because I can.   Porch requests are taken care of.

Some of my best tips have come from police officers and in my case a police officers widow.  I make damn sure that paper is porched as she has a lot of other things to worry about.  She gave me a $20 Starbucks card and a discounted dinner card at Christmas last year.  Now that lady has class!!!

When I got the daily paper in Denver, I tipped $10.00 a month. The only prpblem was trying to catch up with the lady that delivered the paper. She came at O' dark:30 and I was either at work or she tossed it and was gone with a quickness. I had a friend whos wife delivered papers, and he told me that her customers would add tips to the bill and mail it in, but in many cases she never saw that $$, so I wasn't going to go that route.

BTW, when did a newpaper route become and adults job??  Where are the kids on bicycles?

Something you can not hook your Speak N' Spell up to, so don't worry about it.

In my area it has become a sign of the times.  The kids had proven to be unreliable and the managers were sick and tired of having to throw downed routes.  I don't know how it is everywhere but we deliver in the early a.m. hours.  Would you want your kid out at 3 a.m. delivering papers?

Our newspaper has also switched completely over to office pay which means the bill is paid through the mail or online.  Yay, no more knocking on doors to collect!  And I get a print out of all my charges and credits that shows who tipped and who complained, so yes I do get my tips.  And I will show my printout to any of my customers upon request to prove it.  I wonder how your friends wife was paid.  We even have automatic deposit.

Well, I met my carrier the other night.......odd story that the cops in here will love.

My husband was out of town, my disabled parents were downstairs watching TV. I was upstairs reading stories to my daughter. We were both in our jammies. I hear a knock at the door. The porch light is out and I have not reminded hubbie to replace it (its a ladder job for someone who is over 6 feet, which I am not).

Anyway, like a fool, I answer the damn door to see a rather handsome young man with a clip board with out Newpaper logo on it. He gave me a sad story about how he had to get some more subscriptions before he went home for the night (right)...and could I help him out.

I already get Sundays paper and as I was thinking about adding Saturdays paper, he said, "I am so sorry ma'm, here is my id." He showed me his id......very good pic. I added Saturdays paper and he thanked me for helping him out and told me he has extra paper everyday and would let me have them ,since I was so nice.

Whatever. I was in my nightshirt at 8:30 pm and I was being sweet; why not give me free paper. So, now I get the paper everyday for the price of  Weekend delivery.

I would like to tip him, but am not sure how to go about doing so.

When I told my brother about it, he told me I should have tased him for coming to my door so late. After we laughed about that and I reminded him that I didnt own a taser, he got mad at me for opening the door so late and with my parents and child in a vulnerable state. I guess he is right.

Yeah I love it when those subscription sellers come around to our house, or even in front of the WalMart here in town.  They are being sooooo nice and would I like a free paper and to buy a subscription?  (We throw 3 routes and are not subscribers.)  I tell them that we do 3 paper routes everyday and that I do not need the paper.  They stutter and apologize and I walk away laughing my a$$ off.

Why can't they keep track of our address as if we had a subcription, just add us to the list as subscriber/carriers and they can skip us instead of imbarrasing themselves all the time!
