I have just finished watching a tv program about gun ownership in the states.
How many of you guys actually own a gun? Have you ever had to use one?, whether it be physically or just the presence of you holding it might have helped you in some way.
Obviously there will be many of you that do own them due to being in LE, I just wondered how many civilians on here actually own one and why.
A couple of facts from the program:
Owning a gun in the US is almost as common place as owning a car or a pair of trainers.
In the US there are 8 times the number of firearms franchises than McDonalds.
What you will see in the press ... the number of lives taken by illegal gun use....
What you won't see in the press ... the number of lives saved by legal gun ownership...
I have never used a weapon one on one to stop a crime ...
But after my house was broken into about four times ... standing in the back yard doing a little target practice with my new shot gun let the neighborhood thief's decide on an easer target ...
I don't think gun ownership is as common as cars & sneakers. Everyone I know owns both of those, hardly anyone I know owns (or will admit to owning) guns. It's on my list of things to get, but low down on the list, after a motorcycle & tattoo.
I do not own a gun, but I have considered getting a permit and purchasing one. Then I think about it again and put the permit application away, lol.
Because of my dad's job, they were always around when I was growing up and I know how to use them and I'm comfortable with them, but I don't really think that I need one.

Gee, I better own a gun or I am out of department policy...
I have one, never had one before moving to Pittsburgh and becoming Johnny Law. I believe everyone capable of having one should have one. One must be qualified also I believe to get one, like a training course. It should be mandatory...

We had a .22 rifle and a 20Ga. shotgun in the house when I was growing up... I own an Enfield #4mark2 rifle and my work sidearm...
When I lived in WA state I had a CCW and carried about 90% of the time. I did have to pull it on someone that tried to rob me with a knife. Looking down that barrel changed his mind.
I've been on the wrong end of one as well. A third of an inch looks like a train tunnel suddenly.

as I post I am debeating about a 40 or a 45 glock.
belive fully in them, guns dont kill people, stupid people kill people with guns as a tool. yes its a protection thing, yes the media blows the numbers up....but in the long run, I would rather have one and use it on an interuder then not have one and need it for the same.
trust me, it is way to easy to find info out on the net, and that is some very scary shit.
TC, you are correct... It is better by far to have it and never once NEED it than to need it and NOT have it.
I didn't have any cash on me the night the guy tried to rob me, and from his actions I have no doubt he would have used that knife if he was provoked. I know how to handle a knife weilding assailant unarmed, but why take the chance of getting hurt?

Yes, I own a handgun. No, I have never used it other than for practice. No, I am not in LE, just another one of those who would rather have it and not need it, than vice-versa.

There are 30 in my house, yes that is a lot, only 8 are handguns the rest are rifles and shotguns which are used for hunting (and target practice in my case).
I have never had to use a gun for protection, and I hope that I never have to do so. Could I/would I? Yes.
