20/20 on DV

LAst night on 20 20, diane Sawyer did a interveiw with a past victim, now educatior on Domestic Viloence.(DV) It was  a great interveiw, exteremely real, and very graphic. This POS wife beater had their then 13 YO son video tape one of the last times she got beat. That video plus her Boos / friend tht made notes of bruises and problems and phone conversations convicted him of 12 assults. He received a 36 year sentacne. that is the LONGEST sentace of any wife beater in tht part of NY tht DID NOT kill the person.

ITs was very graphic, and I even had to tunr a couple times becasue of my past. (parents)

It was very real and the women was up front and hoenst about the reality of what the thinking is to stay, to leave and the desparte need to cahnge laws. Yu could get more time in a Texas jail/prison for killing an animal then from beating, maning ad/ or killing your wife. THAT IS THE SADDEST THING.

The judge even cried when talking saying it STILL got to him. SHe has been out now for a little more then two years. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. The saddest thing is the daughter stood by dads side, even despite the video. The sad fact is tht with out help, this will go down generations due to it is a learned behavior. Its also one of my personal information peeves. It can be stoped, the women does NOT need to be blamed and the abuser needs to learn how to deal with anger.

Yes, women can abuse men, but the reality is more men abuse women.

DV has become more and more previlent in society and it is sad that we have come to this kind of behavior. There are many forms of DV and it isn't just a man's crime. More and more men are becoming victims everyday. There is more to DV than just physical abuse, the mental abuse lingers long after bones heal and bruises fade! Some of the worst scarrs are carried on the inside.....I know, I am one of the lucky ones to call myself a "survivor".

I will have to check out the links above TC, but I can say what I have seen and heard at "group" and experienced myself would make your skin crawl!

There are ways to break the "cycle" that feeds the violence, but to many women it is too hard and seems hopeless. That is where others have to become involved. Too many people want to turn a blind eye because they are afraid to get involved! As long as it isn't happening in their house, they don't think it effects them, but in reality it does. If DV is allowed to continue at the rate it is going, it will become "acceptible" behavior. Our children will learn this behavior and the cycle will go on and on and on.....

There is safety in numbers. It provides hope to those so desparately seeking it. A little hope can go a long, long way to a victem who has been stripped of their dignity and self. I know...been there, seen it, felt it, survived it. That's why I NEVER turn away from those kinds of situations, no matter who is involved. I can't....no one should....

I tend to disagree.....there was a time when "women were seen and not heard", yet they were also held in a higher "standard" among men. Now, over the generations, women have changed drastically and that "standard" men had (i.e. respect) has had to change as well. Women have assumed a possition of what they think they "deserve" or should be entitled to because times have changed and this has provoked a whole new side to women which has brought forth the femi-natzi's and gold-diggers in huge numbers! These numbers have greatly effected the number of women being abused and the number of women abusing as well. Women aren't the only victims, men are now equal on that list! With the gay community coming out (no offense to anyone) the numbers have also taken a sharp rise over the generations.

I agree kat. In this interveiw, and even on the stand that man that was convicted, staed many times to the police, the court and to others that his wife was "his property" He also included his children in this statement.

The sad fact is, it showed very clearly how the man gets the women "dependant" on him..IE..money, cars /transportation, split from family and friends (isolation) and the like

she even said she went back to work due to money troubles. when she and her boss finally called, the day after the video was made, which was her turning point......He continued to referrer to her as a "hefier" and the police tape it. (they wanted to get his recaction when she called and stated she was afraid to come home.

Through the decades, women have moved from property, to step belows, to finally what we truly are- equals.

the sad fact is, alot of females dont have standards high enough to get even a stray dog from sleeping with her, dating her or the like. My mother did the right thing, and I repect her for teaching me to have standards and not jsut take anything.....

I agree that it is more exposed. I do believe that it is not as TOLERATED as it once was.

the fact is, the abusers pick and choose who, and where they attack. that shows me that it is more then just an anger issue. the abuser insults/ abuses fr things that person ahs no control over, or even gets beat for others that they are mad at. I have worked with people on probation for assult of family memeber, DV and the like. The fact is, and pisses them off to no end- You choose who...and your daughters are going to end up being black and blue, and your sons are going to be doing it to them.
