This is Tela, my appaloosa mare, she is about 30 years old. She is mostly out to pasture now, short walks only.
This is Tela back in her younger days, with her young filly, she was about 15 here.
This is Blue, he is a Paso Fino, about 12 years old. He is fat and lazy.
This was Rusty, Tennessee Walker, was a great horse, he was killed by lightning a few years ago at the ripe age of 12, my mare Tela was also hit at the same time, she has never been the same since. We were home when it happened, nothing that we could do. Sorry it is such a crappy picture, I have better ones somewhere.
This is Choctow, a supposed appaloosa, I sold him a little while back to a deputy a couple of counties over, he wanted him for parades. He is a large horse, 17 hands, in other words too tall for me.
And here is my favorite mustang.
1969 Cobra Jet, yes she lives her also. Had her about 10 years.
She loves to go fast, can't hardly hold her back, I keep telling her to get easy but she just has a mind of her own. I've tried to break her from racing, but so far I have been unsuccessful, she just won't listen.
Nice horses! I like the Paso....he has that fat and I'm happy look!!!!
I know what you mean about the lightning.....we took a hit on our tower here and the animals got "bit" by it. Bandit gets very nervous when it storms now! I'm really sorry you had to loose one that way.....it's a terrible loss.....

And shocking!
Really, I never thought about animals getting hit by lightning.
Really, I never thought about animals getting hit by lightning.
I was home and in the house when we took the hit. My cat was in the window and puffed up real big and screamed, at the same time all the hair on my arm stood up and it felt a weird sensation. The animals outside, they took the hit. The horse screamed and started bucking and running only to stop and stomp his feet over and over. The dogs started howling and yelping....it was bad! I saw the bright flash of lightning and heard the BOOM of the hit, it was a first for me that I don't ever care to repeat!

I never really thought about horses getting hit by lightning before this happened. When I took my mare in to the vet after she was hit he said that it happens all the time. We had just gotten home when it happened. It was really weird. The cat and dog took off running out of the room right before the strike, it was like they knew it was going to happen. We figure that the horses were standing under a small pecan tree right behind the house, Rusty was thrown about twenty feet from where we figured he was standing from the hoof marks on the ground. After the strike I looked out the back door and saw him lying on the ground and my mare running like hell. Went down to him and he was already swollen, nothing we could do. The mare survived but has never been right in the head since and she has also had problems with her feet and legs which the vet attributes to the lightning. I never want to repeat this event either.
