Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and flavors. In a separate bowl make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to first mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk. Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl; add to batter. Blend. Bake in 3-9" or 10" pans for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool completely. Cover with frosting.
Cook milk, flour and salt until thick while stirring constantly. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar very well and then add flavors. Combine with the first mixture and beat well.
**my mom has always made the Adams red velvet cake, and thats what I posted and make also. When they say cream the sugar and the shorting well, for the frosting...I cream it for like 30 minutes. It is just GOOD...
