I leave mine on all the time, only because I never know when someone will be using it, (my kids live in their own time zone I think).

If you know it is not going to be used during the night or whenever then the choice is yours, you can turn it off if you like.

Going back to a hard wired ethernet cable will ensure that you are using the maximum transfer rate, but the wireless transfer rate should suffice anyway.

Just be sure to enable the wireless security and change the SSID to something other than the default, and disable SSID broadcasting.

How do I enable wirelss security? If I click on the Netgear wireless assistane wizard there is a button to click which would enable the security but what exactly does that do? Do I need to use a password every time I log on? or is it just an encryption thingy? Or does it prevent other wirelss users in my area from using my network?

If you run a network with only the default security, where WEP is turned off, any of your neighbours can log on to your network and use your Internet connection.

So you need to go into the router settings, and create either a 128bit WEP key or a WPA key.

A password every time you log on is not needed though.

Disabling the broadcasting of the SSID will stop people from being able to find your router if they scan for wireless networks.
